Penuel means face of God

Beit El means place of a hollow

Dan means judge

And when he was done, just as Aharon, Yarov'am set up golden calves in these temples and commemorated them with the same words the people of Isra’el used in the desert, "These are your gods, oh Isra’el, who brought you up from the land of Mitzrayim!" (I Kings 12:28)

Yarov'am secured his crown with idolatry. His deeds continued to earn him the inglorious epitaph of "the king who made Isra’el sin."

In short, the king of contention caused the people to contend under the ever present guise of promising increase. He built golden calves, teaching the people to turn their backs on the face of YAHOVAH, early in the morning. But it would become the place of hollow where they would be judged.

In the next 240 years, there were nineteen different kings of the northern kingdom of Isra’el. Each one did evil in the sight of YAHOVAH. Some kings were much worse than others but they were all idolaters, corrupt and evil.

Their biggest sin was leading the people of YAHOVAH into idolatry.

Hoshea and Amos were two prophets that lived and prophesized during the time of Yarov'am. They brought the same message to the people as Uzziah, Jotham and Ahaz.

Hoshea and Gomer

Let’s begin with Hoshea, one of my favorites.

Hoshea was a prophet of God. His name means salvation and he is the son of Be-eri, which means My well.

He comes out of nowhere. Hoshea is typified as the Prophet of Doom but underlying his message is a promise of restoration.

Hoshea was born in the northern kingdom which was entrenched in idolatry and apostasy when Yarov'am led YAHOVAH’s people away from worshipping Him into worshipping golden calves.

Hosea 1:2 ADONAI's opening words in speaking to Hoshea were to instruct Hoshea, "Go, marry a whore, and have children with this whore; for the land is engaged in flagrant whoring, whoring away from ADONAI."

Right from the outset, we see that YAHOVAH’s salvation taken from His well came to marry a prostitute. She was a woman born into idolatry and a whore with strange gods.

The name Gomer, the prostitute he was to marry, means completion OR sudden stop or termination. She comes from Diblaim, which means fig cake .

Now, figs were a valuable commodities in Israel. They were a sign of peace and prosperity. Gomer was the daughter of Diblaim who undoubtedly lived during the reign of Shlomo, the reign of peace and prosperity.

But in her, we see a complete stop or termination of this peace and prosperity for she was a prostitute or whore.

Oddly enough, we do not know what kind of life they led. Hoshea was so completely devoted and obedient to YAHOVAH that he married the prostitute as he was instructed. Even after marriage, Gomer went out whoring every night searching the very things YAHOVAH provides if we trust Him.

We can only imagine the stress and difficulties in this marriage.

Gomer had three children.

Jezreel , for yet a little I will punish the house of Yehu for having shed blood at Yizre'el; I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Isra'el.
